Best Local Places for Brunch
Whether you need somewhere to fuel-up before heading outdoors or you’re just looking for a nice spot to catch up with friends, we’ve gathered the best places for some morning scran in the local area.
1. The Barn, Rothiemurchus
During the pandemic, The Barn became a much-needed takeaway spot, with a hatch located opposite the Rothiemurchus Farm Shop. Popular for freshly made morning rolls and excellent coffee, it now has a large indoor seated area which is open from 10am. The morning rolls are served all day and start at £3.50 (depending on how many fillings you cram in). Check out their website for up-to-date opening times.
2. Route 7, Aviemore
A great place for a big breakfast, Route 7 is open from 8am – 4pm daily. They serve a full fry-up (also available in veggie/vegan form), as well as smashed avocado and poached eggs on toast, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, pancakes, and porridge. Located in the Highland Home Centre on Dalfaber Industrial Estate, it’s convenient to get to, and easy to park outside. Check their website for updates.
3. The Rowan Tree Hotel, Loch Alvie
Start the day right with a slap-up brunch at this lovely local restaurant and hotel. Located right on the doorstep of Hillview Cottage, and only a stone’s throw from both Springfield House and Railway Cottage, it offers full cooked breakfasts including eggs Benedict and French toast, or lighter options like cereal, granola and porridge. Served from 8-9:30am, you’ll need to phone ahead to book a table.
4. Explorer Café, Aviemore
This spacious café, on the top floor of the outdoors shop, Tiso, is open from 8am every day and 9am on a Sunday. The views over the Cairngorms are amazing, and it’s a great place for morning rolls, porridge with fresh fruit, granola, pastries and breakfast bagels. They have a wide selection of hot drinks, cakes and sweet bakes, so you can stock up on supplies before heading out for the day.
5. The Pine Marten Bar and Scran
This lively bar and café is a locals’ favourite, and is handily situated just a few minutes’ walk from Loch Morlich. They’re open all day but if it’s brunch you’re after you can get a full breakfast (meat, veggie or vegan), eggs, porridge and filled rolls, all served alongside a variety of hot drinks. The friendly locals who own the place will be happy to give you any tips and advice about the local area, and they even have a ski/snowboard/sledge hire in the winter.
