Our favourite things to do in Kincraig

Fifteen minutes south of Aviemore is the small Highland village of Kincraig. Positioned on the edge of Loch Insch and surrounded by beautiful scenery, it’s a lovely place to while away an afternoon. Here’s a few of our favourite things to do around Kincraig, so you can get the best out of your stay in the area.

The Highland Wildlife Park

A great day out for kids and adults alike, the Highland Wildlife Park is just a few minutes south of Kincraig. Drive through the park as if you’re on a safari, spotting wild animals from the safety of your car. Then walk around the main enclosures, keeping your eye out for polar bears, snow leopards, bison, camels, wildcats and many more.

Loch Insh Outdoor Centre

Hire a pedalo, paddle in a canoe, take a private sailing lesson – there’s loads to do at the Loch Insh Outdoor Centre. They’ve got lots of activities all year round, so check out their website for details and how to book. And for those who don’t fancy an action-filled day, there’s plenty of quiet spots to relax around the loch.

The Old Post Office Café

A local’s favourite, this café serves fresh cakes, sandwiches and salads, as well as delicious coffee. Come in for a spot of lunch and leave with an original piece of Highland art – the walls are adorned with the owner’s paintings, all for sale.

Uath Lochans

Set off on a stunning walk around four small lochs, hidden within the ancient pines of Glen Feshie. There’s a car park at the start of the route, with plenty of space and a few picnic tables, just a few minutes’ drive or cycle from Kincraig. Once you’re there, you can follow two routes around the lochs – both easy to follow with either a red or a white marker post.

Reviving Food bakery

If you love freshly baked sourdough bread and pastries, this is the place for you. You can’t miss Rosie’s bright yellow horsebox, parked at the top of the road as you enter Kincraig from the A9. She’s passionate about sustainably sourced, local ingredients and has created a hugely popular bakery.

Paddle down the Spey

You’ll need a canoe or a kayak for this one, so best not to attempt it on a stand-up paddleboard or something similar! You can launch your vessel where Loch Insh meets the Spey, right beside the church in Kincraig. From here, the current will take you down stream, avoiding a few small rapids and rocks, until you reach The Old Bridge Inn in Aviemore. It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon but be sure to check the weather forecast first.
