Reasons to picnic in the Cairngorms
It turns out that July is national picnic month – who knew? In celebration of this surprisingly un-spoken-about national event, we thought we’d tell you why you should pack up your wicker basket, dust off your best tartan blanket, grab your midge spray, and head for the hills. Just don’t forget the corkscrew.
1 - To get outside
After all the lockdowns and working from home, we all need to get out the house. Fresh air is great for the body and sunlight is a natural mood booster. While we can’t guarantee there will be sunshine in the Highlands, there is daylight for about 18 hours by summer solstice happens in June. Just being outside does wonders for the soul, and a bit of food and drink will just add to the happiness.
2 - It’s cheaper than going out for a meal
Going out for dinner is lovely, but it adds up – especially if you’ve got a family to pay for. With a do-it-yourself picnic you can splash out on some nice wines and cheeses, or stock up on your favourite nibbles, without breaking the bank.
3 – You choose the best seat
There’s no need to scramble for the last available table in the café, with a picnic blanket you can guarantee a great place to dine. The Cairngorms is packed full of amazing hills, lochs, rivers, and stretches of open countryside – and with the ‘right to roam’ you can explore anywhere and everywhere you fancy.
4 – It’s fun
Surely this is the most important reason. When was the last time you actually went for a picnic? It’s a great way to entertain the kids and they’ll love helping to prepare the food and pack up the basket. Or, it can be a lovely surprise for your nearest and dearest. Treat them to all their favourite goodies, with a thoughtful al fresco dinner with a view.
