Wild Swimming: Feshiebridge

There are lots of opportunities for wild swimming along Glen Feshie, but Feshiebridge itself is a great spot, especially on a sunny day. With pools, clear waters and forested banks, it’s a fun place to while away the hours.

About Feshiebridge

This old stone bridge goes over the river Spey about six miles south of Aviemore. There’s a deep pool directly under the bridge and a shingle beach to walk into the water. On a hot summer’s day you’re likely to see some brave people jumping off the bridge into the water.

The river is varied and challenging in parts, especially upstream, so it’s a good idea to stick to the shallows if you’re not confident in the water. If you’re an experienced swimmer and want to explore, we’d recommend going about 100m up from the bridge. Here you’ll find a deep pool that channels up to a waterfall, with plenty of rocks to jump off, or lounge on.

How to get there

Feshiebridge can be reached via the B970 south from Aviemore and it’s about six miles from town. Sat nav will take you to the bridge where you can find a parking spot along the road and walk down to the water. It can get busy in summer, so it’s important to park responsibly and not block any roads or driveways. It’s also a lovely 30-minute cycle from Aviemore if you’ve got a bike.

What to bring

It’s always a good idea to bring some wetsuit boots or water-safe shoes when you’re wild swimming as the ground can be rocky and uneven. If you don’t have a high tolerance for cold water (us neither) you might want to bring a wetsuit – this will also add extra buoyancy. Goggles can be fun as well, especially if you want to catch a glimpse of the trout swimming past you!

What to think about

As with all wild swimming, make sure you check the conditions before getting in. The river levels and speed are dependent on rainfall, so take extra care if it’s rained heavily.
