Wild Swimming: Loch Garten
Nestled within the Abernethy nature reserve, Loch Garten is a tranquil place – perfect for walking, swimming, cycling and picnicking. The Loch itself is surrounded by an ancient Caledonian pine forest, as well as juniper, rowan, birch and heather. Here’s why we think it’s a great place to get in the water:
The view of the loch through the trees
If you park in the Garten Woods car park you’ll walk down a path towards the loch, surrounded by beautiful woodland and then you’ll see the water in the distance, shining through the trees. It’s such a beautiful sight to see a sparkling loch hidden amongst dense forest. It’s a real hidden gem.
The calm water
One of the best things about Loch Garten is the smooth, calm water. Unlike the sea, or rivers, or even Loch Morlich on a windy day, the water is never choppy. Once you’ve done the hardest bit – getting in – you’ll be treated a loch that is easy to glide through. Confident swimmers can swim for hundreds of metres uninterrupted, and less confident swimmers can enjoy the clear shallows.
It’s easy to get into
If you’ve ever tried to lower yourself gently into a fast-running river, or walk over rough stones to get into a loch, you’ll know that wild swimming is called ‘wild’ for a reason. Loch Garten, on the other hand, has loads of spots along the water’s edge where you can walk gently into the water, along soft sand and close to a nearby path.
There’s space for everyone
This Loch isn’t like others that have one main ‘beachy’ bit where everyone congregates. Here you’ll find loads of little nooks amongst the treeline where you can lay your towel down, have a picnic, and enjoy a wild swim in your own little patch. Perfect for those who forgot their swimming costumes.
There’s plenty for others to do
Wild swimming is hugely popular, but it’s not for everyone. If your friends or family don’t fancy a dip in the water there’s plenty of other things for them to do. All along the loch and within the trees are fun trails for walking or mountain biking. There’s also another small loch nearby called Loch Mallachie, which is equally pretty. As we mentioned above, there’s plenty of space to set up your own little camp, have a picnic, read a book, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
It’s not far from Aviemore
Although you’ll feel like you’re miles away from the hustle and bustle of town, Loch Garten is actually only a 20 minute drive from Aviemore. It’s easy to get to and only a few minutes’ drive from the village of Boat of Garten – so super easy to grab a few sandwiches or drinks before heading to the loch.
Whether you’re a confident swimmer or a just looking for a spontaneous dook, Loch Garten has something for everyone. Head along to the water’s edge and enjoy this little slice of the Highlands.
